80th Liberation Day Patriotic Taegeukgi Drawing Contest Held in Hawaii

In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day, a patriotic Taegeukgi (Korean flag) drawing contest was held in Hawaii, bringing together Korean children, youth, and local students. Participants showcased various Taegeukgi artworks filled with their creativity and patriotism.

Last Saturday, the 10th Patriotic Taegeukgi Drawing Contest, organized by the Hawaii branch of the Korean Freedom Federation, was held at the Hawaii Christian Church. This year’s event held special significance as it marked the 80th anniversary of Liberation Day. Over 50 family participants took part, engaging in creative activities centered around the Korean flag. Participants expressed the Taegeuk symbol and the four trigrams on white drawing paper using various colors and techniques, reflecting their imagination and individuality. Notably, not only Korean children and youth but also many local students participated, showing interest and affection towards Korean culture and history. The event was attended by Seo Dae-young, President of the Hawaii Korean Association, Park Bong-ryong, Chairman of the Hawaii Council of the National Unification Advisory Council, and Han Sun-young, Consul at the Honolulu Consulate General, who encouraged the students and their parents. The judging panel evaluated the artworks by age group based on depiction, expression, and creativity. The Excellence Award was won by student Jang Hana, and the Grand Prize was awarded to student 000.

Lee Han-jong, President of the Hawaii branch of the Korean Freedom Federation, said in his opening remarks, “I hope that Korean children, the future leaders, will cultivate patriotism and democratic awareness through this contest, and that local students will feel a love for the Republic of Korea.” He also expressed gratitude to the students and parents who participated despite the holiday.

The organizers announced that all submitted artworks from the contest will be exhibited at the Liberation Day event on August 15th, allowing Korean residents and Hawaii locals to enjoy them together. The Taegeukgi drawings created by children are expected to further brighten the Hawaii Liberation Day commemorations celebrating the 80th anniversary.
